Innovative Antibiotics That Don't Harm Healthy Bacteria

Illinois: Scientists have developed a new antibiotic capable of eliminating harmful bacteria without damaging healthy bacteria.

Research Findings on Mice

In studies conducted on mice, these antibiotics were found effective against more than 130 antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Previous research insights

Previous research has indicated that common antibiotics can affect gut bacteria, increasing the risk of other infections and causing issues with the stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, and other organs.

Expert Opinion

Professor Paul Hergenrother from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign stated that while the antibiotics we use to fight infections can have some negative effects on us, these new antibiotics aim to eliminate harmful bacteria without harming healthy bacteria.

The Future of Antibiotics

He mentioned that scientists want to develop next-generation antibiotics designed to target only the affected bacteria, sparing the healthy ones.

Efficacy of the New Antibiotics

The research showed that at higher doses, the new drug eliminated up to 90% of E. coli, pneumonia, and E. cloacae bacteria. When given to mice infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria like septicemia or pneumonia, the new antibiotic saved 100% of the mice with septicemia and 70% of the mice with pneumonia.
