USA: Texas Police Were Given The Right To Arrest Illegal Immigrants. In the US state of Texas, the police were given the right to arrest illegal immigrants.
Governor Abbott signed into law a controversial bill that now gives state judges the power to deport illegal immigrants back to the country they entered.
According to the new law, offenders will face 6 months in jail and a $2,000 fine, while repeat offenders can be jailed for up to 20 years. The law will come into force early next year.
Meanwhile, US Democratic members of Congress and Mexican officials have said the law, known as Satellite Bill 4, will fuel racial discrimination against Hispanic and Latino citizens in the state, while several human rights organizations have criticized it. It has been announced to go to the Supreme Court against the legislation, but the governor is adamant that this is the only solution to stop illegal immigration.
