Google Takes Important Steps to Protect Users from Financial Fraud

Google Play Protect Fraud

Google announced scanning unknown Android apps for pre-installation through Google Play Protect.

California: Last year, technology giant Google announced scanning unknown Android apps for pre-installation through Google Play Protect. However, now Google is taking steps to enhance protection against financial fraud for users in Google Play Protect.

After this update, Google Play Protect will automatically block all apps, after assessing, whether they request permission for sensitive transactions (which are commonly associated with financial fraud) in web browsers, messaging apps, or file managers.

Importance of the Initiative

This move by Google particularly targets apps involved in financial fraud, which request permissions for receiving SMS, reading SMS, sending notifications, and obtaining permission. Malicious apps can intrude into passwords based on one-time SMS or notification authentication, allowing them to spy on-screen content.

Google will initiate the trial version of this feature for Android users in Singapore through Google Play services in the coming weeks. After blocking the app via Play Protect, Google will issue a clarification stating whether the app can request access to sensitive data, potentially increasing the risks of identity theft or financial fraud.
