In the death of obese individuals, the feeling of loneliness is identified as the major contributing factor. A recent study has revealed that social isolation or the sense of loneliness is a significant factor in all causes of death among obese individuals.
According to a study published in the journal 'JAMA Network Open,' loneliness and social isolation can reduce health issues in obese individuals.
The study, as reported by the media, emphasizes that although the sense of loneliness is prevalent among people worldwide, this research is crucial because obese individuals often experience it more.
The lead author of the study and Professor of Epidemiology at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in the United States, Dr. Lo, stated that nutrition and lifestyle are the most significant factors in diseases related to obesity.
He said that our study highlights the importance of considering social and mental health to improve the health of obese individuals.
The research analyzed data from approximately 400,000 individuals between March 2006 and November 2021. The results showed that individuals who did not experience social isolation or loneliness had 36% fewer medical causes of death compared to obese individuals who felt a greater sense of isolation or rejection from society.
