Unique Characteristics of Planets
Discovery of the Lightest Planet Ever Found
Washington: Planets come in various shapes, sizes, and atmospheric conditions, ranging from hot to cold. Some are so hot that they experience rainfalls of molten rock, while others are so cold that they are called ice giants.
Introduction to WASP-193b
The latest addition to the family of planets is the newly discovered WASP-193b. This planet is several times larger than Earth, but its density is so low that scientists have likened it to "cotton candy."
WASP-193b's Remarkable Density and Size
Located 1,200 light-years away from our Earth, WASP-193b is approximately 1.5 times the size of Jupiter. Interestingly, its density has been measured at just 0.059 grams per cubic centimeter, comparable to foams, low-density plastics, and aerogels.
Scientific Explanation and Composition
Julien de Wit, the author of the report published in the journal Nature Astronomy, stated that the reason for calling this planet "cotton candy" is primarily due to its exceptionally light nature. The planet's atmosphere is composed mainly of light elements such as hydrogen and helium, giving it a puffy, cloud-like appearance.
NASA's Insights on WASP-193b
According to NASA, the size of this planet cannot be applied to models filled with radiative gases that turn into giant planets. This is because WASP-193b does not have any solid surface.
