Study Reveals: One in Five Uses Weight Loss Medication Without Doctor's Consultation

Using Weight Loss Medication: A recent study has unveiled that one in every five individuals is resorting to medication for weight loss without consulting a doctor.

In a study conducted on 2003 individuals, it was found that 29% of those using medications without consultation were purchasing these drugs from illegal websites, while 25% were buying prescriptions based on recommendations from others. Additionally, 24% were acquiring these substances through social media.

The study also revealed that 19% of individuals were influenced to purchase these medications based on recommendations from celebrities.

Study Shows Many Users Skip Medical Advice

Dr. Crystal Wiley, who led the research, emphasized that weight loss medications like Vyvanse play a crucial role in addressing the health concerns related to overweight or obesity. However, it is concerning to witness many healthy individuals entrusting their lives to these medications, which should ideally be reserved for those with genuine medical needs.

Weight loss injections, especially, are designed for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) above 30 or those with lower BMI but at risk of high blood pressure or diabetes complications.

The research found that men were more likely to purchase these medications compared to women. Moreover, 46% of individuals aged between 18-24 were identified as consumers of these medications.
