Study Reveals Over 90% of Tanning Lotion Users Exposed to Harmful Chemicals

FDA Preparing Regulations Amid Concerns Over Tanning Products

Potential Threat Identified for Tattooing Enthusiasts: A new study has revealed that over 90% of tanning lotion users in America unknowingly encounter chemicals that pose a risk to their health.

Published in the Journal of Analytical Chemistry, scientists obtained samples of tanning lotions from local American companies. Among the 54 samples collected from New York, 45 contained compounds not listed on the product labels.

The most common compound found among these was polyethylene glycol, which is associated with causing harm to organs, including complexities in skin cell death.

Another chemical, 2-phenoxyethanol, found in the lotions, is linked to neurological damage in children.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is gearing up to enforce regulations regarding the use of tanning lotions in the coming months. Earlier, in late 2022, after voting in Congress, the FDA was given the authority to implement regulations.

Lawmakers decided to adopt policies following numerous reports of illnesses attributed to contaminated substances in tanning products.

The agency has so far raised concerns regarding the matter and is now preparing to incorporate these substances into rules and regulations.

According to the survey, nearly three-quarters of Americans have used tanning lotions, with half of individuals aged between 30 and 49 having used such products.
