Security Alert: Android Users Warned About Message Relay Apps on Google Play Store

Security Risk: Potential Threat to User Privacy

A security firm has issued a warning to Android users regarding numerous message relay applications available on the Google Play Store. These apps, masquerading as innocent utilities, can exploit users' WhatsApp messages by accessing their device cameras.

According to security researchers at ESET, these malicious apps can install Remote Access Trojans (RATs) on users' devices, enabling them to steal private data.

Identified Threat: Message Relay Apps with Hidden Malware

The company's researchers have identified 12 such malicious apps, mostly disguised as message relay applications, available for download on the Google Play Store. These apps predominantly impersonate popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp, offering features such as private chat, group chat, and video calls. Some of the apps include Privy Chat, Meet Me, Let's Chat, Quick Chat, Friendship Chat, YoHo Talk, TikTalk, Hello Chat, Nidus, Glow Chat, and View Chat.

According to ESET's findings, these apps were available for download between 2021 and 2023, exposing users to potential privacy breaches.

Immediate Action Required: Protecting User Privacy

If any user has downloaded these apps at any time, they are strongly advised to delete them immediately. These apps pose a significant threat as they not only compromise the security of WhatsApp and Signal messages but also can access the phone's camera and record calls.

ESET has observed a significant number of downloads of these apps in Malaysia, Pakistan, and India, totaling over 1400 downloads.
