However, the research mentioned indicates that individuals who spend the entire day sitting can significantly reduce the risk of premature death and stay safe from diseases by incorporating just 15 minutes of exercise.
According to research published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open, experts compared the health of individuals who spent the entire day sitting with those who either spent less time sitting or engaged in short bursts of exercise despite extended periods of sitting.
Researchers analyzed data from 500,000 individuals and, after 20 years, reviewed the data, health status, and medical complications that occurred among all participants.
When the data was reviewed 20 years later, 26,000 individuals out of 500,000 had passed away, most of whom spent more time sitting and working.
According to the researchers, individuals who spend most of their day sitting or working experience various medical complications, ultimately leading to an increased risk of premature death.
The results indicated that the possibility of premature death can increase by up to 16% in individuals who spend more time sitting. However, if those who spend extended periods sitting engage in just 15 minutes of exercise, multiple risks noticeably decrease.
According to the researchers, individuals who spend most of their time sitting should move for at least 15 minutes or engage in light exercises every few hours. This can significantly reduce the chances of various medical complications.
The researchers did not specify a particular exercise regimen, but they suggested that individuals who sit for prolonged periods should perform various physical activities, including walking for 15 minutes or other light exercises, a few hours after sitting for an extended period. This could significantly reduce the likelihood of developing health issues.
