How Cigarettes Can Be Transformed into Eco-Friendly Energy

Cigarettes into Eco-Friendly Energy

Scientists around the world are trying to find environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative sources to reduce dependence on toxic and non-renewable energy.

One of these sources is biodiesel, which is made from biological components such as edible and unprocessed oils, animal fats, and animal fats or vegetable oils used in restaurants. Biodiesel is a clean and environmentally friendly energy source as it is renewable as well as biodegradable.

However, the expensive production of biodiesel is an obstacle to its widespread use. However, scientists have found a solution to this problem in cigarette filters.

Previous studies have shown that adding compounds such as triglyceride triacetin to biodiesel increases the efficiency of the fuel by reducing air pollution and increasing its burn duration.

Triacetan production is extremely hazardous to the environment. Many chemicals are used to make it, which creates large amounts of toxic substances.

According to a study published in the Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, scientists from the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania, in collaboration with the Lithuanian Energy Institute, have developed a method for making tristane using cigarette butts.

We are working on recycling and waste management topics, so we are always looking for waste that is large in volume and has a unique pattern," said Sami Yusuf, lead author of the study.

He said that cigarettes are made of three materials (tobacco, paper, and a filter made of cellulose acetate fiber) and are a good source of raw materials and energy. Moreover, collecting cigarette butts is easy as many companies are collecting this waste.

The scientists used the pyrolysis process to dissolve these bits at 650, 700, and 750 degrees Celsius. After conducting several experiments, it came to the attention of the experts that the maximum amount of triacetin (43 percent) was obtained at 750 degrees Celsius. Apart from this, 38 percent of oil, 25.7 percent of char, and 36.4 percent of gas were also obtained.

Sami Yusuf said that all the items are actually usable.
